BACKGROUND

Nikkie was a stray abandoned in Jeju island. We rescued her as soon as she is available for adoption, because the pound is not a safe place for a small puppy. There was also a danger of being adopted by someone who might use her for breeding, since she is a female pup of a well known breed.

NIKKIE IS...

Nikkie is a lovely female malamute. She is bold, curious, active, fun-loving, mischievous, sociable, cuddly... She is just a perfect pup for someone who is willing to spend time with his or her dog.

SOCIABILITY WITH PEOPLE

Nikkie likes people. She approaches strangers without reservation. She asks for a pet and loves cuddles. She wants to sleep with you on your bed (I'm discouraging it since she will get much bigger). She seems to depend on you but at the same time she is independent. She will find thing to occupy herself if you are busy. But please watch her from time to time! If she is not around you or being too quite for an extended period of time, she might be digging a corner of your yard, chewing a piece of plastic or eating something she'd better not. :-)

She is so happy to see me on my return from work that she leaks. This has been constant since her rescue (now about 1.5 months has passed). She pees or poops out in the yard and on the urine pad as well. (She could not hold long enough to wait for the next chance to be out in the yard.) I think she is aware of the fact that she is expected to use the urine pad indoors. But sometimes you may notice some urine in the middle of floor, which I think is a leak.

SOCIABILITY WITH DOGS AND CATS

Nikkie is very sociable. She is friendly and playful. She runs, wrestles, and engages in a tug of war with doggy friends. But she is not just friendly with other dogs. What is great about Nikkie is... that she could read the hierarchy among dogs and behaves appropriately. She shows proper respect for big dogs when she meets them. She is smart enough to recognize animosity from a dog and avoid possible quarrels. As a result, she is in good terms with most dogs.

Nikkie has not seen cats yet. I think she can learn to like or live peacefully with indoor cats, since she is not aggressive and she is at a flexible stage in her life.

ENERGY / ACTIVITY LEVEL

High

THINGS TO KNOW FOR A LIFE TOGETHER

  • House broken? Yes but she may leak when she is excited or scared.

  • Training? Good (She is great with 'sit', 'come', and 'wait')

  • Leash training? Being done (she pulls rather hard)

  • Shedding? Probably a lot (She has not seen any shedding season yet).

  • Barking? Low (She talks a lot though. She howls when she is left out from a walk)

  • Appetite? Too great. (She cries when I prepare her dish. Thus I give her the dish ahead of the others, always making her to "sit" and give me eye contact. After finishing hers, she goes straight to the dish of the others. Thus I let her out of the house after her meal. She often looks for food on the floor.)

  • Separation anxiety? Unknown

  • Mischief? Digging

  • Motion sickness? None

SPECIAL NEEDS

None

IDEAL HOME

Preferably a home with a yard and with an active play mate for the best.

--------------

Nikkie's Stray Dog Notice.

Nikkie wants to sleep with you on your bed.

Nikkie has no motion sickness. She seems to enjoy car rides since she can be with you.

Nikkie is the best behaving pup at the vet.

We found Nikkie was teething (the upper front teeth) on Nov 1st. Thus she was around 3 and a half months. In mid Dec, I found her canine teeth (last teething teeth) came out and are growing (close to 6 months). Thus her birthday can be estimated on June 15, 2022.

Nikkie in Jan 2023

Nikkie is an impressive puppy with clear markings on her face and cute, bold, friendly, loving and trusting personality. She was very thin when she was rescued. Her weight is increasing rapidly at the moment (1kg/week). Thus we postponed her spaying surgery. We hope she could be spayed at least after her 1st heat.

(There are review papers reporting higher correlation of early neutralization and some type of joint problems and/or cancers. Therefore the authors recommended that dogs whose adult weight is more than 20kg or 30kg are better to be neutered after 1 or 2 years in turn. It is difficult to wait that long for rescued dogs. Thus we prefer to see the 1st heat for a female dog at least.)

Jan 22, 2023

We found Nikkie bleeding on Jan 22nd, 2023. She is 7-8 months and this is her first heat. She will leave for SF to join Woofies Rescue on Feb 9, 2023. She will be spayed in SF.
