BACKGROUND

A liter of 7 puppies about 2 months were abandoned in Incheon City Pound, South Korea in early January, 2022. Two pups were perished early on and and another 2 were adopted. The remaining 3 pups grew up at the pound for more than10 months until the lack of space forced the staff to plan their euthanasia. Thus we rescued these three on October 18th, 2022.

The rescue should have been full of joy and happiness. But the rescue of these three pups was full of anxiety, worry and anger, because all of them were diagnosed canine distemper during their first vet visit, having contracted virus at the pound. They were hospitalized, received treatment and survived.

They were wild and shy of people, having grown up at the pound without much interaction with people. Thus they moved to the trainer's on November 12th, 2022. Dooree (only male) made a lot of progress and will be available for adoption soon. Seoee also made significant progress. Hana. however, is very shy and still actively avoids people.

The pound the pups grew up is a notorious one for unsanitary kennels and not following admittance protocol installed to prevent potential contagious diseases. Two out of 7 pups were perished very early on and two were adopted. Thus 3 pups remained at the pound.

Jan 2022 (1st row) and May 2022 (2nd row)

The pups grew well in spite of poor living conditions. In early Oct 2022, the pound accepted 32 new dogs who were rescued from a dog meat farm. The long-time resident dogs, like these 3 pups (now young adults), had to give away their space. Thus the pound staff planned their euthanasia. In mid Oct, 2022, we rescued them in response to the request of the pound volunteer. Three dogs were finally able to get out of the pound after living more than 10 months.

The rescue should have been a happy one. But, in the case of these 3, it ended up as their hospitalization, because all of them were diagnosed as canine distemper on their visit to a vet made as soon as they left the pound. They must have contracted the virus from the new dogs rescued from the dog meat farm. The cases of canine distemper already had started to appear, firstly among the new dogs, and then among the resident dogs as well, which was known to us only after the confirmation of canine distemper.

Later we found out that the pound staff did not follow the protocol for screening out the individuals who might carry dangerous viruses such as canine distemper or parvovirus; New dogs were not tested for canine distemper or parvovirus and let mingled with resident dogs right away. The responsible office of Incheon City Government knew nothing about the breach of the protocol or the outbreak of canine distemper among pound dogs. We made a report with no realistic expectation of a change, since these practice must have condoned by the office staff for months if not for years. There should have been a vet at the pound according to the law, but the volunteer said she hardly saw a vet.

The 3 dogs were hospitalized right away and received an aggressive antiviral antibody therapy. Luckily they survived and made a smooth recovery. They were allowed to move to the trainer's in mid Nov 2022, where they were going to receive training to improve their sociability and for basic obedience. We named the only male as Dooree and the two females as Hana and Seoee. (Hana means the 1st, Dooree the 2nd and Seoee the 3rd. This doesn't mean Hana is the oldest. We don't know who was first to born. We just named them by the sequence we saw).

Hana, Dooree and Seoee playing together at the vet after having confirmed negative for distemper in early November, 2022. We let them stay hospitalized for another week or so to make sure their recovery from distemper was complete.

All three dogs needed training for basic obedience and sociability. Among them, Dooree, who is bold and largest, made a fast improvement. He is friendly with people and other dogs. He started to get training for basic obedience in mid Dec 2022. Seoee is a little shy but she responds to calls from time to time. When treats are involved, she comes to the trainer most of the time. Hana, however, is extremely shy. She has improved in a sense she does no more hide in a corner. Still she actively avoids people. Seoee and Hana will be able to get training for basic obedience only after they respond to calls reliably. We think Hana will take a very long time to get to this level.

They have a long way to go. As soon as they receive an approval from the trainer, they will be available for adoption. This does not mean their training is done. This means that they now comes on calls and knows a few basic obedience commands. They might also be trained for leashed walks. But they will still need an experience to live with people including house training. Thus they will be moved to the rescuer's home until they either get adopted in Korea or leave for SF to join Woofies Rescue. We cannot wait to see them adopted and live in joy with their human family!

Please keep watching them!

UPDATE on DOOREE

Dooree moved to the rescuer's home with Bell and Cookie on Feb 11, 2023. He may leave for SF on Feb 21, 2023, if a foster is found in SF.

Dooree likes people and is curious about people. But he is a little nervous and skittish around people. This is not surprising since he has had not much experience in interacting with people and this is the first time for him to be allowed to be inside home. He seems more and more relaxed day by day.

Dooree is sunny, active, friendly to most dogs. He is very energetic; he keeps playing until his playmate is exhausted. He is still restless inside home but he started sleeping through the night. He has not made any mistakes, though he is let out in the yard quite often. He does not soil his manner band during the night (midnight to 6:30AM). Dooree has not started marking yet both inside and outside home. Dooree had no motion sickness for 1.5hr driving from the trainer's to the rescuer's house.
