BACKGROUND

A 2-3 month old puppy was found to hang around alone in a wide field growing radish in Jeju Island. The radish field was neighboring a wide 4 lane road that people consider an autobahn. Many dogs were hit and died on the spot and the cars went their ways without stopping. A local rescuer kept watching the puppy playing between the dangerous road and the field for a while and finally stepped in. She took the puppy to a safer area on May 20th. The puppy was female and had 4 new front teeth. The puppy still needed somewhere to stay. Thus we took puppy in on July 1st. We decided to call her Moo-ah ("radish-child").

MOOAH IS...

Mooah is a very energetic, playful, fun-loving, confident, smart girl. She is sweet with people and friendly with most dogs (Please see below which type of dogs she is less friendly with). She is always in the center of activity. She is a pleasant girl to have around.

SOCIABILITY WITH PEOPLE

Mooah likes and wants to be with people. But she is also a little afraid. Thus she is skittish with new people until she is sure these new people are nice. She likes to sleep in the same bedroom or near the bedroom people sleep in. She has not been with children or babies. It is hard to tell how she would behave with small children.

SOCIABILITY WITH DOGS AND CATS

Mooah is very friendly with most dogs. She approaches new dogs and let them sniff her hind. She initiates chasing or rough wrestling. She poses the lower ranking dog during play. She lets other dogs mock-bite her neck and legs and then takes turns. Young active dogs have a blast with Mooah.

Mooah seems to be sensitive to the power hierarchy among dogs. She is either cautious or indifferent to big dogs with power. She stands up to dogs challenging to her in size or in temperament. And she can be mean to small weak dogs.

I have 8 dogs in my house in addition to Mooah at the moment. Dongdong is the smallest aged pomeranian mix (7-8kg) with the lowest rank. Mooah chases away Dongdong. Sometimes I cannot figure out why she chases away this harmless little Dongdong. After a while, I see them taking rest together on the deck with the other. Thus there must be a sort of understanding and acceptance now. Still occasionally Mooah chases after Dongdong while they take treats from me in turn. Mooah does not do this with Itsy or Bitsy, who are smaller than her but who are the low ranking members (They are only two males among 9 dogs).

Mooah is similar in size and temperament with Baily (a sapsaree mix about 28kg). Both are young and over jealous for treats and my attention. From the day 1, Mooah did give Baily a mean stare and Bailey reacted. They did a few growling matches without actual fight so far.

Mooah does not interact at all with my top GSDs and avoid them when my GSDs scold her for her indoor hyper activity (Hillie does not like dogs playing too rough indoors. She is more strict than myself).

Mooah has not been with house cats. She chases after a stay cat seen over the fence. Thus she may hunt stay cats. Jindo, in general, has an instinct to hunt for a kill.

ENERGY / ACTIVITY LEVEL

High

THINGS TO KNOW FOR A LIFE TOGETHER

  • House broken? Yes.

  • Training? Being done (okay with "sit". not so good with "wait" for treats given in turn ; good with "come")

  • Leash training? Not done. She pulls. (Sorry. We had heavy rains days and days since July.)

  • Car rides? Only in the kennel so far. She is likely to be fine or has minor motion sickness (salivation) during car rides.

  • Shedding? Low

  • Barking? Low

  • Appetite? Very good

  • Separation anxiety? Unknown (There are other dogs at all times.)

  • Mischief? Chewing things up (cloth toys, wood, plastic...)

SPECIAL NEEDS

Mooah in the radish field on May 20th, 2022.

Teething (taken on May 20, 2020)

Mooah is shy and skittish but still friendly (July 5th, 2022).

Mooah loves to chew. When there is nothing to chew, she will find one!

Mooah is good with "sit" (and "wait" too).

Mooah plays very well with other dogs.

Mooah has stayed in my house about 40 days. During 40 days, she was spayed, received basic obedience training ("sit", "wait", "come"), and made friends with most dogs in the pack (esp. she is good with new dogs). Mooah needs leash training (there wasn't enough time due to heavy rain for many days in a row). She also need to strengthen her obedience training. Mooah has a tendency to pursue to be the top dog. Thus one needs to pay attention to her while she interacts with new dogs. Most of time she will end up as a good friend. But in some case, she may quarrel with or bully the other dog, which will be rare but could happen. My fun happy pleasant Mooah is not perfect. She is only a Jindo~
