BACKGROUND

Otto is from UlSan, a city in a southern part of Korean peninsula. We don't know anything about his background, other than he was picked up from the street. He stayed at the pound for 10 days. We rescued him to avoid euthanasia.

OTTO IS...

Otto is a very friendly sapsaree mix male. He loves people so much that he gets hyperactive around people. He really loves people and really wants to be loved. He gets along fine with other dogs but his main focus is on people.

SOCIABILITY WITH PEOPLE

Otto loves people. His face literally lights up when he sees people. He comes for a pet. He leans against people. He jumps up in order to get close to people's face. He wants to do things with people. He follows around people. We have seen dogs like him, but Otto is a little extreme. He won't leave you, once you pet him. He hates to be separated from people. He is the opposite of aloof dogs.

SOCIABILITY WITH DOGS AND CATS

Otto is friendly with dogs. He approaches a new dog and starts playing. He does so to both males and females and both old and young. He loves to run, chase after each other, wrestle with other dogs. He loves to play with toys by himself too (Be careful! He eats latex toys. Thus it's better to remove soft toys once the playtime is over).

ENERGY / ACTIVITY LEVEL

High

FOR A LIFE TOGETHER

  • House broken? Yes (He was let out 11pm and 7am and a few times during the day. Please have him with a manner band for a week or two. He does marking in the yard and almost none indoors. But a male dog could start marking in a new environment even though he stopped doing so in a familiar environment.)

  • Basic obedience training? He knows commands like 'come', 'sit', 'down' and 'wait'. But he often chooses to ignore the command. For example, he does not go out to the yard, because he wants to be inside home with people. On the street, he may not 'sit' because he gets excited. Therefore one needs to be firm with Otto. Try not to give anything good if he does not listen to you and always make an eye contact before you give something good to him so that he knows his good behavior earns goodies from you.

  • Leash trained? Yes (He pulls initially and gets better with time. He listens fairly well to corrections. Recommend to use a martingale collar initially.)

  • Car rides? Yes (salivation and vomit)

  • Shedding? Very low

  • Barking? Yes. (Defensive barking to strangers)

  • Appetite? Good (Otto has good appetite but frequent yummy treats or wet food will ruin his appetite and he will stop eating his kibbles. If this happens, stop giving treats or wet food altogether for a while. He is so crazy with yummy treats that he could not wait his turns. He jumps to take over treats of others. He probably had a past life without having chances for such yummy treats.)

  • Separation anxiety? Unknown but possible since he loves people so much. At the rescuer's house, Otto is okay to be left with other dogs in the yard.

SPECIAL CONCERNS

(1) Otto has tear mark under his eyes. He needs regular cleaning. (2) Otto eats latex toys (balls). Therefore please watch him during a play with a latex ball and remove the ball from him once he seems to be chewing it too long.

IDEAL HOME

Otto will be okay in any house. But he will be better in a house with a yard since he is active.

Otto's Stray Dog Notice

Otto stayed at a doggy hotel about 2 months. And then he came to the rescuer's house on June 26, 2022. It was clear he needed training. He jumped a lot to get people's attention. He won't listen to commands like 'sit' or 'down' given to calm him down. And he did not play with other dogs at all. He was not unfriendly but he simply chose to stay alone chewing up toys. He seemed to have a single track mind for people and his food/toys. He stayed about a week and then moved to the trainer's on July 6th.

At the trainer's, dogs follow a strict schedule. During the day, there are times for mingling/playing in the playground, for solitary walk/training, and for rest alone confined in their own kennel adjacent to the playground. At night, dogs also sleep alone confined in their own kennel.

Otto did not like solitary confinement. He used to bark and destroy the interior of his kennel during the day or night while he was confined in his own kennel. This had been continued for a long time until the trainer decided to leave him in the playground tied with a long lead during the rest time during the day. He was tied so that he could not poke around while other dogs rest. Otto could take this and the problem solved. His behavior has gotten better in his kennel at night as well.

It is unclear what Otto hated when he was confined alone in his kennel; aloneness or confinement or physical separation from people. It could be all of three, but solitary confinement must have been the major issue for him, since the behavior disappeared when he was out in the playground, although tied with a long lead. Otto never showed destructive behavior while he stayed in the rescuer's house, where Otto was left in the yard with other dogs while the rescuer went off for work during the day.

Otto also did not mingle with other dogs initially at the trainer's. Gradually Otto accepted other dogs and started playing with them. Now he is quite sociable with other dogs. He is good with new dogs too. But he is more focused on people that he is ready to give up everything he has been doing if people call him.

Otto's under eye areas were not clean and stained with tears (see the photo above). The vet examined his eyes and found no external problems such as eyelashes grown inward. But the vet could not find clear drainage in both eyes. He said it could be due to past inflammation or it could be innate problem. The vet removed some of his 3rd eyelids to reduce tear production, which was not really effective in getting rid of tear marks.

Otto came back to the rescuer's house on Dec 10th. He is still the same boy, who is friendly, love-seeking and strong-willed. He still gets excited at the sight of people although he is a little calmer than before. He is also very sociable with other dogs. He greets new dogs (Teo, Nikkie) and play with them He kindly ignores provocations of small boy Teo who sees Otto a challenge to his maleness. It has been Otto's non-reactiveness that saved many fights with Teo. He is also kind to Nikkie, an Alaskan Malamute puppy who is as big as him but only 5-6 months old.

Otto is being none-reactive to Teo's subtle challenges.

Otto is a great playmate.

Otto plays gently with Nikkie, an Alaskan Malamute puppy of 5-6 months old. He always checks on me since he is always ready to answer my calls abandoning what has been doing.

The below is the video taken on Otto's first walk in wood. He pulled initially because he was excited and there were other dogs running off-leash. The video was taken in the middle of the walk. See he calmed down and listened well.

Otto is a good dog to both people and dogs although he may not be the best behaving dog.
