BACKGROUND

DongDong used to be a feral dog who had lived in a group of wild dogs in a deserted town known as White Snake. She, along with other 31 dogs, was captured and sent to a shelter in early 2019. She was a young adult at that time. We decided to take her in in March, 2021.

DONGDONG IS...

Dongdong is a very cute little dog. But she has not been adoptable because she dislikes people. Not only she dislikes people, but also she will try all her might to avoid people. She is not greatly social with other dogs but it is no problem compared to her behavior toward people.

SOCIABILITY WITH PEOPLE

Dongdong is very afraid of people. She is shaking visibly when she is forced to in close proximity with people. If the stress is too much, she will try to escape. When she cannot, she may drop a few poops. She also has strong dislike of people. She stares at people with feelings close to hatred in her eyes.

It has gotten better over a year she has been with me. I know she sometimes wants to be inside with me and other dogs (how surprising it is!). Sometimes she enjoys my caress. Most of the time she lets me do my things on her (but I'm very careful and talk to her in a really gentle tone constantly). The key to reach the current state was the walk. Dongdong loves walk very much. If you give her an individualized walk every day, you are on the fastest track to win her heart (Don't expect she change her hatred toward you in weeks though).

But still she is non-comparable to any other dog I have had so far. Even Daisy, who tried to bite me right after the rescue, opened her heart after several days. Dongdong still may bite me if I lift her up to weigh her. I need to wrap her around with a blacket or something . I think she still is a wild animal, NOT domesticated, captivated by people against her will.

SOCIABILITY WITH DOGS AND CATS

Dongdong never plays with other dogs, which makes me think she might be older than she looks. The best social behavior she showed so far is to approach my GSDs to show affection (giving a kiss around the mouth). She may run happily toward some dogs. That's all. Most of time, Dongdong is out of sight, hiding in a dog house. When I'm not in the yard, she stays on the deck with the other dogs. She is in peaceful relationship with most dogs. Dongdong seems to be the lowest in rank. There have been 2 Jindo mix dogs attacking Dongdong with no provocation (probably they thought DD was bad for the pack health and tried to remove DD).

Dongdong's problem in sociability with dogs, if there is any, is too minor, compared to that with people.

Dongdong is okay with indoor cats.

ENERGY / ACTIVITY LEVEL

Low

THINGS TO KNOW FOR A LIFE TOGETHER

  • House broken? Yes, but poop in stress.

  • Training? Not tried

  • Leash training? Great. She won't pull. She rather follows you from behind (she is afraid of giving you her back).

  • Car rides? Only in the kennel. Only mild motion sickness, if there is any.

  • Shedding? Average

  • Barking? Medium (She barks at me. (Her vocal cord was cut but she is able to bark).

  • Appetite? Fine

  • Separation anxiety? None

  • Mischief? None. She hides in a corner most of the time.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Try not to force her into anything she does not like (ex. bathing, nail clipping, shaving). If you push her too much without coaxing her with gentle words, she may bite if she cannot avoid you.

Dongdong does not come to people. Thus it is hard to do anything with her (taking her to the bathroom for a bath, for example). But there is a trick. Dongdong loves walks so much that she will come with you voluntarily if you put a leash on her and gently tug the leash.

Dongdong will escape if there is a chance given. Try to block all escape routes in your house and your yard. She is very smart. She will make your mind at ease, then escape.

IDEA HOME

A small apartment where Dongdong cannot escape people. If there is a non-dominant nice dog, it will be even better since Dongdong will need a buffer for the first few weeks.
